Back in April 2021, I wrote about participating in LifeShip DNA’s project for the first off-world genetic seed bank.
LifeShip signed a Space Act partnership agreement with NASA! The company is sending a series of biobank capsules with DNA from humanity and Earth’s biodiversity to the International Space Station (ISS).
Back on January 13th I received an update. The update was that they passed a recent design review with Firefly and finalized the capsule design and the location on the Blue Ghost lander. The LifeShip aluminum capsule is now being manufactured.
The capsule, with my DNA, is planned to be mounted to the underside of the top aluminum deck of the lander. This location provides an additional layer of metal for radiation protection. We estimate your DNA will be recoverable for about 10,000 years.
DNA seed banks off-Earth are a way to add resilience to life here on Earth and a small step towards our bigger mission to spread life in the Universe.
Saving the genetic blueprint of Earth and humanity on the largest off-Earth satellite is an important step in our big mission.
The DNA of over 2,000 humans and 500 species would be included in this seed bank and the launch party was posted on YouTube:
