For this review, I take a look at the HOLDPEAK HP-881D Digital Illuminance/Light Meter.
Many people tend to associate light meters for use with photography or cinematography which is quite understandable, as lighting is a huge importance for professionals.
But a lightmeter is also used by professionals trying to ensure there is proper lighting, may it be lighting in a building, stage, warehouse, factory, hospitals, restaurant, store, etc.
Especially if you want light to be evenly distributed.
The HOLDPEAK HP-881D Digital Illuminance/Light Meter is a professional device to help you measure the Lux (a range up to 400,000 Lux), which is a measure of illuminance, the total amount of light that falls on a surface. Whereas, lumens is a measure of luminous flux, the total amount of light emitted in all directions.
So, the best way to think of things about lumens is the light coming out of source, while lux is the light falling to a surface.
So, an example is lights I used for growing indoor vegetable plants during the cold winter and prepare them for spring. So, I purchased an LED lamp and got another that were cheaper and tried different lights. Did they emit the same type of light? Because different light intensity can make plants grow differently.
Of course, taking photos and video is huge and while there are specific hardware devices made for photographers and videographers (I highly recommend for photographers and videographers to use specific light meters that are targeted to photographers/videographers), but for a general multipurpose luxmeter, you can test out various light sources if you use a lot of lamps.
Or even workplaces, have you been to a building where one light was off? Darker than the rest or gave a different type of light? Even a type of light that gives one migraines, while there are lights that were better suited for an office? This is where a lightmeter can be very handy.
For example, for my office, I want light but also have it dim to not affect my eyes and to avoid a headache. With my luxmeter, It’s around 35 and when I open the curtains, then I get around 155. For me, 35-50, I’m comfortable with.
It’s lightweight, it runs on two triple AAA batteries which the device comes with (along with a mini screwdriver to open the battery compartment).
The Digital lux meter allows for environment temperature display, it has a green backlight that you can turn on, has data storage, relative value and a bar graph display.
The head can rotate 270 degrees, which makes it much easier to read light from a fixed position.
And also, HoldPeak offers lifetime support from their service team!
It’s a very useful device if you work with light, so I definitely recommend having a HOLDPEAK HP-881D Digital Illuminance/Light Meter if you need to measure light.
