Quite often, you will find a shrine located next to a major commercial facility in Japan.
In Nakameguro, Dairoku Tensha is located right at the edge of Nakameguro GT Tower and is a Shinto Shrine dedicated to the kami, Tenjin (a deity of Academics, Scholarship and Learning). At one time, Tenjin was seen as a God of natural disasters, but with the deification of Sugawara no Michizane (a famous scholar, poet and politician of the Heian period), Tenjin is now seen as the patron of scholarship.
So many people come to visit and pray at this location in order to do well in school exams or by parents praying for their children’s success at the shrine before an important entrance exam. If successful, the person returns to give thanks.
Also, they say the guardian deity helps protect people from harm and jealousy, as well as health longevity, praying for a prosperous business and home safety.
Dairoku Tensha was a small shrine created in the late Meiji era and has moved quite a bit.
Rebuilt in 1945, with the redevelopment of Nakameguro Station in 1999, it was temporarily placed at Nakameguro Hachiman Shrine and moved to face Meguro Ginza Street in 2002.
