The One about the Glico Sign at Dotonbori in Namba, Osaka

In Osaka, especially in Dotonbori, you will find hundreds of people making their way to Ebisu Bridge for one thing and that is to take a photo with the famous Glico sign in the background.

But what is the significance of the Glico Sign?

For those not familiar with Glico, the company is known for manufacturing confectionery products such as chocolate, chips, gum, ice cream and dairy products.

Known for creating “Pocky”, “Pretz” and their popular almond chocolates, the Glico Sign has been there since 1935.

Of course, the sign has been revised with new technology especially to celebrate the World Cup, promote the Hanshin Tigers and because of its history of being one of the oldest, most recognized signs in Japan, it’s become a tourist attraction.

The current sign is on its 6th generation which was debuted on October 23, 2014.   The current sign changes every 30 minutes after sunset.  Some may see the sign become blue, purple or reddish, the running lanes change in color and if you are lucky, see the one with a popular destination in Osaka showcased in the background.

There are several ways to get cool photos, the most popular that you will see people get is the angle from Ebisu Bridge.

If you want a photo with no angle, you can go down the bridge and go the center of the shot.  Granted, you can’t get close because there is a canal there but you can get a good shot.

There is also a smaller area to get a shot right near the Little Osaka Glico store.

But good news is that Glico has a guide for people who are looking to take photos of the popular sign.

And last, Dotonbori is full of awesome shops and restaurants.  Explore the Namba area and have fun!
